Case Study – Municipal – Dundalk and Drogheda WWTP

In 1997 Dundalk Urban District Council (DUDC) commenced the construction of a new Wastewater Treatment Plant to service the towns municipal, commercial and industrial wastewater. This WWTP was to treat a population equivalent (PE) of 180,000 persons.

EPS Pumping and Treatment Systems were the mechanical and electrical contractors on the project. As the project neared completion, EPS entered into an interim operate and maintenance contract with DUDC for the WWTP.

Under this contract, EPS were responsible for complete operational services, including process control, full maintenance services, regulatory and process analytical analysis and full reporting requirements and liaison with the council in monitoring and controlling industrial discharges to the treatment works.

During this time, EPS sought and achieved ISO 14001 for the operation of the works. This necessitated the development and implementation of an environmental management system. As part of the reporting requirement of ISO 14001, the Performance Management System (as released by the Water Services National Training Group) was utilised and audited as part of the environmental management system.

In 2002, Dundalk Wastewater Treatment Works, along with Drogheda Wastewater Treatment Works were put to tender in a 20 year operate and maintenance contract. EPS Pumping and Treatment Systems were successful in their tender and have now operated Dundalk and Drogheda Wastewater Treatment Plants for Louth County Council since January 2004, serving a PE of approximately 250,000.

Included in this contract was the operation of 10 pumping stations in Dundalk and one major pumping station in Drogheda along with the installation of a thermal sludge dryer on the Dundalk site.

Case Study – Municipal – Midleton WWTP

In 1996 Midleton Urban District Council commenced the installation of a wastewater treatment plant at the Beechers Boreen site in Midleton County Cork. The WWTP was designed to treat a population equivalent of 10,000. EPS were appointed as the mechanical and electrical contractors for the contract.

It was the wish of the client to receive sewage into the works ahead of the anticipated completed date. During the permanent installation project, EPS installed temporary power units (diesel generators) to power air blowers, associated valves, a temporary screening plant and an ultra violet disinfection unit. This allowed the plant to receive and treat sewage while the permanent installation proceeded. EPS entered into an interim operate and maintenance contract with Midleton Urban District Council.

In 2003 EPS Pumping and Treatment Systems brought the operation of Midleton WWTP to ISO14001 accreditation, thus becoming the first company in Ireland to do so.

Case Study – Commercial – Castlelands Construction

Castlelands Construction is a distinguished developing firm based in County Cork. They are currently engaged in the development and construction of a number of sites in the Cork area, including Castlewhite in Whitechurch, Castlerock in Midleton and Castlepark Village in Mallow.

One of these sites, Castlewhite, in Whitechurch, Co. Cork, required the installation of a treatment plant capable of treating the wastewater from the houses in the development. This treatment unit has a discharge licence with which the developer must comply.
There was also a water treatment plant installed, with the capacity for 60 houses, which must supply water compliant with statutory regulation S.I. 439 of 2000.

EPS installed the treatment unit and offered operational and maintenance services to the developer. This service consisted of regular scheduled visits to the works, training of a developer employee to perform daily checks on the system, sampling and testing of the effluent in the case of the wastewater treatment plant and analysis of treated water quality for the water treatment plant ,generation and submission of reports. A callout service is also available in the event of breakdowns or emergency events. Supply and installation of spares and or repairs was also included in the scope of service.

Case Study – Local Authority- Carlow County Council.

Carlow County Council required a water treatment plant for the town of Hacketstown, Co. Carlow. This plant was to supply 800m3 per day, and once again comply with all relevant national guidelines and statutory regulations with regards final water quality. The process utilises chemical flocculation, Dissolved Air Flotation with a combined rapid gravity sand filter and chlorination.

EPS designed, built and are operating the plant since June 2003, and provide full backup for the plant in the event of breakdowns from our Mallow and Naas offices. The plant utilises 24 hour callout service via a GSM Messaging service, and full maintenance is carried out on the plant and machinery as required by manufacturer’s guidelines.

Case Study – Group Water Scheme – Annagh Group Water Scheme

Annagh Group Water Scheme required a water treatment plant to provide 2,500m3/day. The scheme was sourced through the design, build operate procedure which required a contractor to design build and subsequently operate the plant for a period of twenty years. EPS were successful in their bid and have been operating the plant since July 2003 and provide full backup for the plant in the event of breakdowns from local operate staff and backup from our Ballyhaunis and Cookstown offices

The process utilises ozone gas for colour removal, which is generated on site, followed by Carbon Filtration and chlorination, which is produced on site by means of an electrochlorination unit. The plant utilises 24 hour callout service via a GSM Messaging service, and full maintenance is carried out on the plant and machinery as required by manufacturer’s guidelines.
