Water Treatment Boost for Kinsale
Cork companies Electrical Pump Services (EPS) and Bowen Construction have secured a joint contract to build and operate a €5.6 million wastewater treatment plant in Kinsale.
Construction on the facility in Cappagh, three kilometres south of Kinsale, will begin in September for a planned opening date of December 2010. Under the terms of the joint contract, awarded by Cork County Council, Bowen Construction will carry out all civic works on the five-acre site.
EPS will have responsibility for process, mechanical, electrical and plant automation. It will also manage plant operations for a 20-year period following its completion.
Funding for the €5.6 million project will be provided by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government under the Water Services Investment Programme.
Cork County Engineer Noel O’Keeffe said that the new treatment plant would deliver significant benefits to local residents in Kinsale town.
“This contract is the final element of the Kinsale main drainage scheme, which has seen the construction of a new pipework collection system within Kinsale town over the last 18 months”, said O’Keeffe.
“The benefits arising from a modern wastewater facility like this will include full compliance with all national and EU requirements for wastewater treatment and improved water quality in Kinsale harbour to benefit amenities and tourism activities.
It will also result in capacity for future commercial, residential and industrial expansion of Kinsale town and its environs.”
Tom Ruddy, the newly appointed joint managing director of EPS and lead member of the EPS-Bowen consortium, said Kinsale was a high-amenity tourist town, reliant on clean bathing waters and high environmental standards.
“This facility will integrate well into the existing EPS operations structure in place for Cork County Council and the 80 other facilities, which EPS is operating for local authorities throughout Ireland”, he said.
Established in 1972, EPS Pumping & Treatment Systems specialises in the supply and installation of pumping and treatment systems. A family owned company, it is the largest dedicated water pumping operation in Ireland.

Ruddy took over as joint managing director of EPS in April following the retirement of Gerard Buckley. Tadhg Buckley was appointed to the position of joint managing director of the company which is headquartered in Mallow.
