Water Treatment
E.P.S. has a huge range of water treatment processes at its disposal.
We offer advice and solutions to satisfy the most difficult application.
Our most common treatments offered consist of the following:
Bowl
Filters - Remove suspended particles
Softeners
- For hard water with high concentrations of lime
Iron
& Manganses Filters - Used where water is staining
utensils or corroding
pipes
Nitrate
Removal Filters - Where the levels of nitrates in the
water exceed recommended EC levels
pH
Correction - Used where low pH is causing corrosion to piping
systems
Purification
- Where chlorine or UV (ultraviolet light) is added to kill harmful bacteria
Reverse
Osmosis - Removes all trace elements and provides ultra
pure water
FILTERS
Water used in agricultural and domestic water systems, contains
suspended firm particles such as sand, rust, sludge, etc. These
particles of different size varying from few microns to few millimetres,
cause damage and corrosion to water systems, taps and electric household
appliances.
It is necessary to prevent and to solve the problem by installing
a special filter. EPS offers filters of different materials. Filters
are available in 2 pieces (head + bowl) and in three pieces (head
+ bowl + ring), in brass or in plastic material for food use. Filter
cartridges can differ in material and in performances:
washable cartridges
with net in polypropylene 60 and 80 microns, for potable
water;
stainless steel
cartridges with washable stainless steel 80 microns, for potable
water
wound cotton cartridges
5 and 20 microns, disposable;
activated carbon
cartridges for removal of tastes, odours, colour, chlorine;
cartridges with
polyphosphates in crystals, anti-scale and anti-corrosion action;
dechlorinating
cartridges
Special wrenches are available for filters in three pieces.
Our standard filters are 10" with ¾" connections.

WATER SOFTENERS
(LIME REMOVAL)
The water in many parts of Ireland contain mineral salts, predominantly
calcium and magnesium, constitute the hardness which causes scale
damage to water systems, boilers, electric household appliances
valves and taps.
If the water hardness is higher
than [ ], it is recommended that a water softener is installed.
This retains the dissolved calcium and magnesium salts with
special synthetic resins eliminating the excessive hardness.
A softener is the absolute solution to scale problems. It
consists of a container for the resins, a container for the
salt (required for the regular regeneration of the resins),
and a valve controlled by a timer, which controls the required
regeneration necessary to keep the softener working efficiently
for a long period of time. |

IRON & MANGANESE FILTERS
The presence of iron not only makes the water yellow-red and gives
a bad metallic taste but also creates deposits and as a consequence
the pipes gradually clog up.
The presence of iron in the water for domestic use stains taps
and linen leading to aesthetic and hygiene problems.
Drinking water must not contain more than 0.2mg/l or iron and 0.05mg/l
of manganese.
EPS offers a series of column filters, called DEFERR capable of
eliminating elevated quantities of manganese and iron from water.
This filtering is done in two steps. First, a special metering pump
adds some hypochlorite to the water that oxidizing the manganese
and iron present in the water. Before passing through the Deferr
filter, the water has to remain in a container for the time necessary
to complete the oxidizing process.
Then a pump takes the water to the Deferr filter and the oxidized
manganese and iron are transformed into flakes that are retained
by the iron remover special filtering material. It is then necessary
to periodically remove these flakes by means of backwashing. This
is done by a timer which controls the iron remover. The frequency
of these backwashings is determined by the pressure drops inside
the filter itself caused by flake deposit: from once a day to once
a week according to use. It is absolutely necessary to install one
filter before the DEFERR and one after it, to the sure that no flakes
arrive to the water system.
The iron remover can be chosen according to the rate of flow required
and the iron concentration present in the water.
EPS personnel will be happy to do this for you.
NITRATE REMOVER
The presence of nitrates in the water is caused by the decomposition
of nitrogenous substances that can be found in human and animals
and mainly in the use of fertilizer in agriculture containing nitrogen.
These fertilizers are more and more used and high concentrations
can be found in water beds and in all agricultural areas. Children
up to seven years old and elderly people are more subject to the
risk of pollution due to fertilizers, because it may affect the
composition of the blood reducing the haemoglobin giving origin
to carcinogenic processes.
In waters for domestic use, it is advisable to reduce the excess
of nitrates by installing a nitrate remover with anionic resins
regenerated by sodium chloride (common salt). The resins contained
inside the nitrate remover retain the nitrates present in the water
exchanging them with the regenerating solution (sodium chloride).
The regeneration treatment is programmed with an automatic volume/time
procedures, guaranteeing the maximum safety for a water supply without
nitrates. The size of a nitrate remover can be established according
to the daily water consumption and to the concentration of nitrates.
NEUTRAL COLUMN FILTER NEUTRALIZER
Water in many mountainous regions, may have very low pH value,
low hardness value but high quantity of carbon dioxide. This fact
causes corrosion and as a consequence the perforation of pipes.
A solution to the problem is given by installing a neutralizing
filter with calcium carbonate.
NEUTRAL filters are made up of a column containing special activated
masses of calcium carbonate capable to increase the pH value and
the water hardness.
Periodically, the activated carbons need to be washed and this
is carried out automatically by the head of the column filter controlled
by an electronic timer. The frequency of washing can vary from a
maximum of once a day to a minimum of once a week.
The neutralizer can be chosen according to the rate of flow required.

ULTRA VIOLET STERILISATION
Water in its natural state passes through many different
soils, rocks and atmospheres before it reaches our drinking taps.
This causes a partial contamination of our drinking water and the
result is a requirement to get rid of these pollutants. If you have
a public water supply, this treatment is done by the Co.Councils
or Urban Councils but if you have a private supply it is important
that your water is tested to ensure that it does not contain coliforms,
viruses or other bacteria that can cause harm to your health.
Councils mainly use Chlorine to kill the bacteria but as this is
not an easy liquid to handle the alternative is Ultra Violet Sterilization.(
UV) EPS has UV systems of varying sizes from undersink units suitable
for the
home, to large Industrial units used in Factories and Hospitals. We
also have a range to suit dairies where sterilization is essential
for bulk tanks, milking lines etc.
We always recommend that a 5 micron filter be fitted before the
UV unit to ensure that any bacteria cannot be hidden in small particles
that may be present in the water.
We carry a large stock of units from 1/2" to 4".

Reverse Osmosis
Reverse osmosis ( RO) is a process to remove and reduce chemical
and bacteriological pollutants
present in water.Of the water we use on a daily basis about 7% is
used for drinking, cooking and washing our fruit and vegetables. For
domestic use we provide an RO unit that can fit under the sink and
capable of producing sufficient pure water per day for the above
uses. We provide these with pumps if their is insufficient incoming
pressure on your system.
For larger Kitchens, Canteens, Labotatories and processes requiring
pure water we can design a system configured to meet the most exacting
standards.
